Negombo offers one of the best beaches on the west coast of Sri Lanka. It draws tourists who stop over for a day on their way to or from the airport. Some quiet stretches of the beach are maintained by the tourist hotels, while others are always busy with fishermen and their equipment.

Hikkaduwa is located about 100km south of the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo. The area is well known for its coral sanctuary, the proximity of wonderful scuba diving sites to explore and having a top surfing beach. With its unique beach culture and vibe, Hikkaduwa has long been one of the more popular beach party destination in Sri Lanka. In the centre of Hikkaduwa, a protected lagoon creates a beautiful and safe snorkelling area. Further south, where the currents are stronger, surfing is the dominant water activity. The impressive coral reef runs just offshore and is populated by exotic fish and sea turtles that occasionally come ashore to lay their eggs.

Lovely Arugam Bay, a moon-shaped curl of soft sand, is home to a famed point break that many regard as the best surf spot in the country. It's a tiny place, with a population of a few hundred, and everything is dotted along a single road which parallels the coast. The Kalpitiya peninsula on the north-west coast of the island of Sri Lanka, 120 km north of the capital Colombo, is one of the most beautiful and least developed coastal stretches in Sri Lanka. This narrow strip of land is separated from the mainland by the Puttalam Lagoon on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other and is home to natural habitats of diverse fauna and flora.
Kalpitiya is also famous as the first region in Sri Lanka to commence Dolphin & Whale watching, and to date can boast the highest dolphin sighting ratio of around 93%, and some of the largest schools of dolphins around the shores of Sri Lanka.

This long sandy beach is largely protected by headlands, reefs and sand-bars, making it safer for swimming.
The headlands have reefs along their rocks, close to the beach. At both the Pehambiya end and the western end, swimmers can snorkel out from the beach to watch colourful reef fish amongst the rocks.
Local inshore fishermen, especially at the sheltered Pehambiya end, mostly use colourful small Oru outrigger canoes which are easier to manoeuvre over the seasonal shifting sand-bars.
